How Technology In Entertainment Provides the IoT Inspiration

The depiction of technology in entertainment gives us an idea of how we want to make our lives better. Whether it is a home that greets you when you get home and prepares you pizza in three seconds like in Back to the Future or by using a replicator like in Star Trek.

My favorite futuristic society though is depicted in The Jetsons. The Jetsons takes place in a futuristic utopia that is set in the year 2062. (We only have 47 years to go!) They had cars that folded into suitcases, robot maids and a home that did everything for you including making you dinner and cleaning up afterwards. This was the 1960s view of the future.

One interesting thing about The Jetsons is that it only lasted for one season. This was because it was produced in color but most TVs at the time were still black and white and people didn’t find it to be that futuristic. The Jetsons accomplished a much larger following after color TVs became more common in American homes. Whether in color or black and white, presenting ideas such as home automation and technology in the 1960s was way ahead of its time.

So while the suitcase car is not coming anytime soon, a lot of the concepts of Internet of Things (IoT) are beginning to be introduced into our lives. As life often imitates art, we draw inspiration from this entertainment to imagine where our lives are going.
